Chapter 10: This chapter examines sonic memories of the Armenian Genocide, drawing on survivors' earwitness testimonies (testimonies describing auditory and sonic experiences of the Genocide). While visual evidence predominates in studies of genocide, this chapter makes the claim that sonic memory-as a site of historical, cultural, and affective knowledge, and as a type of memory that can be individually and collectively formed-can deepen our understanding of the historical aspects of genocide, as well as the social, psychological, and emotional dimensions of genocide. In relation to contested histories, attending to sonic memories can also be a form of 'counterlistening': listening against official narratives of genocide and, in the case of the Armenian Genocide, against the narrative of genocide denial that continues to be maintained by the Turkish state. This chapter suggests that the voices of Armenian Genocide victims-concealed and denied for over a century by Turkey-can nevertheless be excavated and listened to via the sonic memories of genocide survivors. In engaging with sonic memories, it draws on oral testimonies collected by Verjiné Svazlian, an Armenian ethnographer who walked from village to village in Soviet Armenia for a period of decades, collecting, recording, and transcribing some 700 survivors' testimonies when it was not safe to do so. It contends with Svazlian's original acts of counterlistening and 'soundwalking' and how they make possible a more shared or public form of listening today. More broadly, this chapter considers how sound and listening formed a part of the injuries as well as the violent tactics of the Armenian Genocide; and asks how listening to genocide can reshape our understanding of genocide and its effects.

This volume offers an introduction about theoretical concepts, forms, and the impact of genocidal violence. It thereby intends to serve as a source of texts that can be used in a variety of introductory courses on genocide and the violence that occurs during genocidal events in particular. It will consequently also offer a survey on debates and recent research about the history, sociology and psychology of violence.

Les responsabilités internationales, et françaises tout particulièrement, qui ont rendu possible ce génocide « prévisible », selon les mots du rapport Muse de 2021, ont été objectivées. Les recherches récentes montrent que l’entreprise criminelle aurait pu être stoppée, même au début de la phase paroxystique engagée quelques heures après l’attentat contre l’avion présidentiel le 6 avril 1994. Cet engrenage vers l’extermination planifiée des Tutsi a été dans le même temps – on le sait avec le rapport Duclert –, combattu par des agents de l’État de la République française, par des chercheurs, journalistes, citoyens. Leurs engagements sont ici appréhendés à travers des portraits, des analyses en profondeur et des documents d’époque.Il importe de réfléchir au sens de l’événement incommensurable qu’est le génocide des Tutsi, de rechercher les traces insondables qu’il dépose dans les sociétés, de penser l’impératif de prévention pour éviter la répétition de l’histoire tragique, de s’interroger enfin sur les raisons de la faillite collective de n’avoir pu empêcher la catastrophe. Malgré les connaissances acquises sur le génocide des Arméniens et sur la Shoah, malgré les alertes nombreuses, la France et la communauté internationale ont laissé le processus génocidaire aller jusqu’à son terme au Rwanda. Des chercheurs français, rwandais, d’Europe et d’Afrique, se sont réunis pour composer ce volume du Genre humain. Ils se reconnaissent dans le devoir de recherche exigeant une quête déterminée, implacable, de la vérité historique. Des sources nouvelles, des sujets renouvelés, des faits démontrés livrent un important savoir, qui paraît un an avant la trentième commémoration du génocide, fragment d’une histoire commune désormais possible.

Dans les pays dont l'histoire est chargée de guerres et de crimes de guerre allant jusqu'au génocide, ou encore de colonialisme et d'esclavage, les gens sont confrontés au défi et à la tâche de se pencher sur ce Problème. En effet, il s'agit d'un poison pour la cohabitation, avec le risque que les crimes se répètent. Cela vaut pour l'Europe et en particulier pour l'Allemagne, qui a été marquée par deux guerres mondiales, la Shoah, l'expulsion et l'exode en Europe centrale, les Balkans et, plus récemment, la guerre en Ukraine. Mais les pays africains sont également confrontés à une telle tâche. L'histoire de l'Afrique des Grands Lacs est chargée d'un passé non traité, marqué d'injustice et de violence, de guerres civiles et d’autres atrocités. Pour un "traitement" continu de ces fardeaux, des initiatives telles que des formes et des forums de la mémoire sont nécessaires. Les contributions de ce volume - avec un accent particulier sur le Burundi - veulent en montrer les esquisses.
